Job Description

Cazoo was founded in 2018 with a mission to transform the way people buy cars by providing a transparent, no-pressure buying environment where consumers can simply and seamlessly purchase and finance a used car entirely online.

Cazoo founder & CEO, Alex Chesterman, has already raised 450m in funding from DMG Ventures, Draper Espirit, General Catalyst and Octopus Ventures, amongst others, to expand the Cazoo world. Our accelerated rate of expansion has secured our status as the fastest-ever unicorn in the UK.

We have a great team who love cars as much as they love improving customer experiences. We are Customer Obsessed, Data Driven, Fast Drivers and Team Players. We are building an environment to maximise productivity through ensuring everyone has autonomy, mastery, and purpose in their work.

About the role:

Due to continued success, we're growing our team with an experienced and enthusiastic Software Engineer. As a Software Engineer, you'll be joining a prod-eng team made up of 6 worlds: Merchandising, Orders, Operations, Platform, In-Life and Production. These worlds contain several cross-functional teams, that offer autonomy and progression for Software Engineers coming into the business.

We recently launched our platform, built with a modern tech stack: a fully serverless, event driven architecture with JavaScript and Typescript at its core. The vision for Cazoo engineering is to build a world-class engineering culture and as a software engineer, you'll be playing a key role in that mission.

Upon joining, you will spend your first month getting to know our current set-up and the challenges we face, while also taking part in an intensive boot camp to immerse you in our product, values, and the engineering standards we follow. Your role will then be focused on delivering a host of new features and functionality that will continue to enhance our customer experience, while improving the overall efficiency and effectiveness of our core systems.

You will play a key role in a number of our exciting new projects, which will include building a brand-new orders system with a self-service checkout or building our new planning and delivery system.

What you'll be doing:

With each world made up of multiple cross-functional teams, we currently need a number of engineers to join our Orders world. The orders world own the customer journey from finding the right car, through to home delivery. This includes the checkout experience, financing the car, adding extras, exchanging their old car and managing their order. You'll be supporting the development of our customer proposition, building high-end software to support a rapidly growing business, and deliver an amazing experience to our customers.

Cazoo embraces modern coding practices such as TDD, Clean Code, XP, DevOps and Software Craftsmanship including pair programming and a "you build it, you run it" mindset. You will support the building of a culture of engineering excellence, through coaching and mentoring other engineers in your team as well as furthering your own personal development.

Your passion and experience will make a massive difference as you join a small and friendly team where teamwork, pride in your work and a positive and practical attitude is key. It's important that you have strong communication skills, sound decision-making capabilities and a genuinely innovative outlook.

Key skills and experience required:

We are primarily looking for software engineers to join our teams who are humble & customer-centric, who enjoying being part of a collaborative team.

  • You have a strong engineering background delivering high quality applications of significant complexity using any object-oriented language, such as JavaScript, Typescript, Java, Python or C#
  • An appetite for developing your experience around application design and architectural decision-making
  • You have extensive experience with modern software development practices such as TDD, CI/CD and a DevSecOps mindset
  • You are comfortable moving between front-end and back-end technologies, even if one of these domains is not your core expertise
  • You can take on constructive feedback and put this into action, with plenty of support from senior team members and the wider business
  • And last but certainly not least - someone with a sizable appetite for learning and self-development, who prides themselves on being a valued member of the team.

If you're excited about continuous improvement, building impactful applications, are customer obsessed and want to be part of building an amazing brand - we'd love to talk to you.
